Get Some Rest

"Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest."   Mark 6:31

I recently left the fast paced work force scene because of severe back pain.  I kept working through it as long as I could but finally had to give it up.  For the first time in many, many years I am “unemployed”.  Being what many call a “Type A” person I found myself in great need of the reminder to “Be still and know that I am God”.The first few days I was restless and felt as if I were failing because I was not working on numerous projects and working with hands to PC, phone to ear and another on hold, to-do-lists in every corner and someone at the door calling my name.

Then while driving around town one day I came to a red light in a lane where I was preparing to turn right.  In our state it is legal to turn right on red after making a complete stop. I sat at the light and did not immediately turn right. Instead I waited for the light to change. It took a few seconds to register what I was doing. I didn’t rush on through so I could get to my destination faster, I stopped and waited even though I didn’t have to.  It was at that moment I realized I was .slowing down!!

Jesus and His disciples didn’t have a red light to speed through, in fact they walked wherever they needed to go.  Crowds were always around them. Jesus knew rest was needed.  Even God knew rest was needed. Genesis tells us that after he created the heavens and the earth, the sun, moon and stars, land and sea, animals and man and woman, that HE RESTED (see Genesis 2:2).  On one occasion after meeting with so many crowds Jesus called to his disciples to gather at “a quiet place and get some rest” (see Mark 6:31).

Do you have a quiet resting place? Do you need some rest? Don’t wait to be forced to rest follow the example Jesus gave. If He can take time to rest, don’t you think you should too?

AN ENCOURAGING IDEA    Here’s a craft idea you can make to make to understand how much God thinks of you. Fill a small jar, salt shaker, or similar item with sand. Add decorative ribbon at the top and tighten the lid. Using a computer, typewriter, or even handwriting print the following verse and attach to the jar:

How precious are your thoughts of me, O God!
How vast is the sum of them!
Were I to count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand.
When I awake,
I am still with you.
Psalm 139:17,18
