Showers of Blessings

As they continued their travel, Jesus entered a village. A woman by the name of Martha welcomed him and made him feel quite at home.  Luke 10:38

Last month was Pastor Appreciation Month. Did you tell your pastor “thank you” for being your spiritual leader?  It seems appropriate that following the Appreciation Month is a month designated to celebrate “Thanksgiving” and to focus on the many blessings we receive.

The holidays can be very difficult times for many people. For some it is the first without a loved one who passed away or moved on; for some it is first holiday living away from family; for some it is a reminder of no family.

I encourage you, especially during these next couple of months, to look objectively at your life. Make a list of the blessings you have. Look at each difficulty and find the peace that God has promised to help you through it.

Some ways you can share your blessing and maintain an attitude of thanksgiving could include:

Visit a nursing home, spend some time with a shut in

Invite someone without family nearby to share a meal with you

Help out at your local City Union Mission

     Adopt a single parent family

Assist a needy person/family with winter utility bills

Deliver wood to an elderly couple that uses their fireplace for heating

Choose the greater yes in your life. Say yes to a postive path that will lead you away from a holiday pity party to accepting a blessing. Open your heart to God and accept His peace.

I remember a dear friend of mine who had cancer. Upon entering her home to visit you were immediately made welcome and she asked “how are you” before you had a chance to ask her. She sincerely sought to encourage those she knew she would soon be leaving behind. You did not get to leave her presense until she prayed with you. While she was the one suffering the physical challenges brought on by cancer and chemotheraphy, she demonstrated God’s love and enjoyed His peace. She shared that peace with all who entered into her presence. Everything that she did, she did as unto the Lord. (see Colossians 3:23.

You will have trouble, so Jesus has offered you His peace. Will you accept His peace as you walk through this life? Some look at the glass as half full, some as half empty. In Amos chapter 5 we are told to “Seek good, not evil, that you may live.” A positive outlook then appears to be a choice. The old hymn goes “there will be showers of blessings”; will you look for those blessings? Decide to look for the good, look at the positive!!  And Praise God in all things.
