Family Fun with the Bible Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. Ps 51:2
Have you ever tried to get a stain out of your favorite shirt? You try soaking it, you try all the different items on the shelf advertised as “new and improved”. Sometimes you just can’t get it out.
I recently encountered a “stain” I thought might wipe me out. It was on my computer. In an attempt to locate a song for a friend I clicked on a link I thought was safe. Instead it that took me to an adult site and cluttered my computer with a virus that took over several programs. We worked for hours cleaning the stain it left behind.
I was gritting my teeth and going over all the cleaning steps on my computer; as soon as I cleaned up one strain, another one popped up. I started thinking my battle with sin is like this.
I see something that looks so innocent and click through only to find myself sinking in a sinful nature. It could be neglecting my Bible Study and slipping into Harliquin Romances filling my mind with lustful images; it could be bargain shopping and spending my money on something I don’t really need and not using it in a purposeful manner; it could be simply watching TV an allowing the images portrayed to be my intellectual focus. Each activity in itself is not necessarily a sin, but the path it leads to can overtake my life just like the virus overtook my computer. To cleanse me from my sin I have only to repent, because Christ has already offered the cleansing formula. He died on the cross and rose from the dead to prepare a place for me in heaven as a child of God. He cleansing can overtake my life !!
TVLAND is asking people to sit down to dinner with your family on September 25, reminding us all that our lives have become so busy and hectic the family structure is breaking down and a simple act like having a meal together can begin the process of making a difference. It sounds so simple, but I wonder how many families do sit down to a meal any more. I know myself that since my children are grown and on their own I eat in front of the TV and by talking to others I realize I am not the only one. (for information on the TVLAND challenge, click here)
I wonder about a Family Bible Time Challenge. Pick one night this week, sit down with your family and have a time of devotion. Here are some ideas:
1) Have a Bible Quiz. Ask each family member to write a question and also the Bible reference answer on a card. Questions on one side, answers on the other. If your family is large enough divide into teams and have a moderator ask the questions, if not modify the process to fit your family size.
2) Dress up as Biblical characters and guess who each person is.
3) Using teddy bears or dolls act out a Bible story with smaller children.
4) Using large font, print scripture verses, then cut the words apart. Make a game of putting the words together to complete the scripture phrase.
Bible Study can be fun. Come up with your own ideas. I’d love to hear what you and your family do. Send an email and even include a picture. If I receive any I’d be happy to share it with the Bear Witness family. Send it to bearyann@bearwitness.org
